Britpave commissioned internationally respected consulting engineers, Arup, to carry out a series of studies investigating the potential for injury from collisions with roadside crash barriers.
Arup discovered that, in detailed studies spanning many years, researchers have found no correlation between ASI and injury, and consider ASI to be irrelevant to passenger injury in impacts with roadside barriers. Other measures from EN 1317 give a better indication of passenger injury. These include the speed at which a passenger’s head would impact the vehicle interior and the acceleration the passenger would be subjected to following this impact. Concrete step barrier gives measurements below these limits, so serious injuries are unlikely.
Simulations of EN1317 tests using crash test dummies indicate a negligible probability of injury.
