working widths

Safety restraint systems are defined in terms of Containment Level and Working Width.

The Working Width of a barrier system defines the distance from the traffic face (face that vehicle hits the barrier) to the extreme point where the barrier deflects to.

Or in the case of a rigid barrier the distance to the extreme point of the vehicle should it lean.

The working width shown here for Concrete Step Barrier is instantaneous at the point of heavy impact, which is why lighting columns can be put in the top of the barrier. Conversely steel barrier stays deformed until repaired.

The importance of working width is that the smaller the working width, the narrower the central reserve can be. No vehicles are allowed to travel within the zone defined by the working width.
