Containment

Appropriate containment levels are determined by government policy and are related to numerous criteria including but not limited to the type of road, volume of vehicles and structures being protected.

Higher containment is required where the risk of damage/injury is high in the event of breaching the barrier system.

Where high containment can be provided at minimal or no additional cost to low containment barrier systems it is considered to provide a safer environment for the motorist. It is important that the Accident Severity Index (ASI) values meet the EN 1317 requirements so that the system used can not be considered to pose an excessive risk to the occupant of the vehicle hitting the barrier.

New concrete step barrier provides increased H2 containment with a reduced ASI value of only 1.4 and impact severity level B.
